In April I was welcomed by my friend Dr. Adarsh Jain’s family in India. It’s a beautiful country in which I love many aspects, but this short blog post isn’t a travel guide.

My friend and his family are Jain. It’s an ancient religion that promotes non-violence, which translates to a rigorous vegeterianism. I really enjoy their customs (and became myself vegetarian). However, I found out that despite +5M Jains, they don’t have their own emoji. In the religion category for emojis, nothing’s dedicated for Jains.

Which is the reason why I wrote a proposal for having a Jain symbol featured in the Unicode Emoji library. This proposal needs to be publicly hosted and available online to then be reviewed by the Unicode consortium.

This blog post mainly serves as hosting this proposal. The Institute of Jainology and Bharatiya Jain Milan endorsed and approved it. The proposal was submitted on June 16, 2026.
