My Mac Setup 🍎

I love setting up my computers. So much so that I reset everything two or three times a year. Over time, I’ve gotten into the habit of noting down the essentials I need to feel comfortable. I could have used Nix to have a config-as-code, but I find the learning curve too steep. So I fall back on the good old Homebrew to reinstall everything manually. Maybe one day I’ll have the will to use Nix properly—who knows?

    Discovering Cloudflare Workers

I developed a small web app that retrieves temporary codes I receive by email. A rather odd idea if the goal is for anyone to be able to log into my accounts… Which was precisely my goal. I had already registered my domains into Cloudflare to catch all received emails. I thought I had explored all the free features of the beast. Apparently not. In this blog post I wrote down how I used Cloudflare Workers to create an app that fetches temporary codes sent by mail, and also 2nd-factor Authentication (2FA) ones, and expose them on a simple website.

Update of my static site ⬆️

I underwent a rather significant overhaul of my blog. I wanted to take a few minutes to write about my approach. This article follows the one on creating the blog. "Update" banner generated by Dall-e 3 The big surprise I discovered that Toha, the theme I use for Hugo, has been updated. In fact, it was Hugo that told me, because it was impossible to compile the site on my laptop with a recent version of Hugo. So I had two options:

        Single-node Kubernetes with ingresses ☸️

For a friend, I did a Telegram bot and containerized the app with Docker. In reality, that was the beginning of a long struggle to keep only Docker and configure a reverse proxy, because I’m really bad at that. Instead, I installed k3s, which allowed me to have single-node Kubernetes, meaning all running on a single VM. Kubernetes makes it possible to orchestrate containers, thus solving many of my issues. Coding and Hosting a Telegram Bot with Python 🐍

I spent a few weeks creating a Telegram bot for a very dear friend. Until now, he had been performing the redundant task of posting content on social media using the same template created with Canva. While Canva is very accessible, it still involves redundant steps that can be easily avoided. With chatbots and Telegram making headlines recently, I thought it was a good idea to launch my own chatbot. Here’s how I did it.

Set up a Catch-All email for cheap 📥

Until now, whenever a restaurant or website asked for my email address, I was reluctant to give out my real address. I’m obsessed with never reusing the same password, and I also don’t want my email address to be sold to third parties. If this is your case, there are several solutions, including the Catch-All email address which allows you to use any different addresses as you wish. Just imagine:

What Windows Server Core is capable of 💠

Windows Server is the version of Windows favoured by businesses for their on-premises infrastructure. It offers various solutions, or roles, that are not (always) found in the home versions of Windows. This article aims to overview essential roles on Windows Server Core. Active Directory (AD) What would an infrastructure be without a directory? Active Directory does exactly that: Centralise users Group users and assign roles Manage access rights to resources Manage computers and devices connected to the network Active Directory manages the company’s domain, and users can connect to it using credentials.

The Modern Stack of Facebook.com 📚

I loved Facebook during my childhood. Today, people from my generation agree to call it the worst social network, still it remains the most popular social network in the world. With 2 billion active users daily, Facebook is “not dead, nor dying” according to its director (March 2023). Launched on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg, or “the Zucc” as we love to call him, Facebook started as a PHP monolith coded outside his creator’s class hours. As they couldn’t anticipate the success of the social network, its code was readjusted, and the infrastructure modernized.

Boost your pro career with certifications 🏅

After 12 cloud and DevOps certifications, I can tell you that I’ve learned a lot. Those little virtual badges have managed to stimulate my dopamine, and the reward isn’t just a chemical reaction in my brain. Some people ask me about certifications, and I want to summarize what I say to them into a single article, so that you too can benefit from this system which, in my opinion, values the skills of everyone, but still needs to be nuanced in the professional world.

Host your blog for 0€ 💸

LinkedIn, Meta and Twitter want them down! To create content in the 20’s era (from 2020 on), there is a plethora of platforms. Some are newborns (Mastodon, Notion), some are ephemeral (Google +, Skyblog), some are somewhat disliked (Facebook, Twitter), these have a life sometimes shorter than your washing machine. But there is one platform that does not suffer from programmed obsolescence: blogs. In the first post of my super blog, I wanted to tell you how I made… my blog. Hosted on GitHub , made with Hugo and maintained by me, it (almost) costs me 0€ to keep. I hope that by reading this tutorial, you will be able to realize how easy it is to make your own https://timothechau.vet for nothing.

                      My new website/blog/CV/portfolio ✨

After two weeks of hard work, teaching myself the fundamentals of the Toha theme working with the Hugo framework, I’m very happy to to launch my super personal blog on which I’m writing these lines. I use the services of GitHub to host my site and the superpowers of GitHub Actions to generate the static content of my site. Feel free to give me feedback on my site 👋 🤖 This article was written without the help of an AI
